A decibel figure on a box looks like the kind of number you can shop on โ€” bigger means louder, louder means it'll wake you, done. None of those three steps is as solid as it looks. The scale itself distorts casual comparisons, the number is rarely measured the way you'd assume, and for a device meant to wake a heavy sleeper, a loud number and an effective one aren't the same claim at all.

Adjustable maximum vs peak rating

There's a second, quieter distinction that changes what a number means: is it the maximum you can dial the alarm up to, or the peak it hits at one specific moment during the sound pattern (some alarm tones ramp or pulse rather than holding a constant level)?
