Bed shaker decibel myths: what the dB number doesn't tell you
A decibel figure on a box looks like the kind of number you can shop on โ bigger means louder, louder means it'll wake you, done. None of those three steps is as solid as it looks. The scale itself distorts casual comparisons, the number is rarely measured the way you'd assume, and for a device meant to wake a heavy sleeper, a loud number and an effective one aren't the same claim at all.
This isn't a sales page โ it's an explanation of a spec you'll see quoted (some bed shaker alarm clocks, including the Sonic Bomb SBB500SS at up to 113 dB adjustable, publish one; most wrist-worn vibration bands don't publish anything comparable at all).
The scale itself is the first trap
Decibels are measured on a logarithmic scale, not a linear one. That single fact is why a jump from, say, a mid-range number to a slightly higher one on a box doesn't mean "a bit louder" in the way going from 5 to 6 apples means "one more apple." Small differences in the number represent much larger differences in actual sound energy than they appear to on the page. We're not going to hand you a specific multiplier here, because doing that responsibly requires knowing the exact measurement conditions behind each number being compared โ and as the next section covers, you usually don't have those. The takeaway that survives without the math: don't treat a gap of a few decibels between two products as a minor difference. Treat it as an unknown-sized one, and probably larger than it looks.
Measured from where, exactly?
A decibel reading is only meaningful alongside a measurement distance, and consumer alarm clock listings routinely leave that out. Sound intensity falls off sharply as you move away from the source, so "95 dB" measured six inches from the speaker and "95 dB" measured three feet away describe two very different devices โ and a box that just prints "95 dB" with no distance attached is telling you less than it appears to. Reputable published specs (loudness standards used in professional audio and hearing-safety contexts) always pair a decibel figure with a distance. A consumer alarm clock spec sheet that doesn't is not lying, exactly, but it is omitting the detail that would let you actually compare it to a competitor's number.
Adjustable maximum vs peak rating
There's a second, quieter distinction that changes what a number means: is it the maximum you can dial the alarm up to, or the peak it hits at one specific moment during the sound pattern (some alarm tones ramp or pulse rather than holding a constant level)? "Up to 113 dB, adjustable," as Sonic Bomb states for the SBB500SS, tells you the ceiling โ you can run the device quieter, and most nights you probably would, saving the maximum for when you've slept badly and need every channel firing. A bare peak figure without the word "adjustable" attached tells you less: it might be the loudest instant in a pattern that spends most of its time well below that, which makes it a worse predictor of what actually reaches your ears through a closed door or a pillow.
Why a bigger number isn't a better alarm for a heavy sleeper
Here's the part that matters most if you're shopping specifically because sound alarms have stopped working for you: the mechanism that makes a heavy sleeper miss a loud alarm mostly isn't about volume. Habituation โ your brain learning to filter a predictable, repeated stimulus โ happens to a 95 dB alarm you've heard every morning for months in much the same way it happens to a quieter one. Turning the volume up buys you a few more weeks before you filter that too, not a permanent fix. A device advertising a higher decibel ceiling than the one currently failing you might work, briefly, for exactly that reason โ novelty, not raw loudness โ and then stop working again once you've adapted.
