Putting a phone on vibrate under the pillow or against the mattress is the first thing almost everyone tries before spending money on a separate device, and it isn't a bad instinct. A phone is small and dense relative to a pillow or mattress surface, so it tends to slide during the night โ off the pillow, into a fold of the sheet, under the frame of the bed โ and a phone that has migrated three inches from where you placed it can lose most of its contact with your body. It also gets buried.
