Pavlok Shock Clock vs Silent Wake
Short answer: the Shock Clock is a real product that really does deliver an electric stimulus, and if the idea appeals to you, nothing here is going to talk you out of it. But the specific belief that makes people buy it โ a zap will wake me when a buzz won't โ has no published evidence behind it. We looked. There is no study comparing electrical stimulation against vibration for waking a sleeping person, and the two journalists who tested the Shock Clock in print both defeated it the same way: they took it off.
So the comparison isn't really "zap versus vibration." It's an unevidenced escalation you pay a premium for and can remove half-asleep, against a device that does the one thing this category is actually good at.

What the zap actually is
Pavlok's product pages publish no figure at all โ just "adjustable intensity levels." The numbers exist, but you have to go to the help centre to find them.
For the current generation, Pavlok states the scale as "0% is 136V and everything is scaled linearly" up to "610V (though older ones are like 480V)". For the older Shock Clock 2 generation: "50 to 450 Volts (amperage 0-4.5mA)."
One wrinkle worth knowing: that specifications article lists the figures under "Pavlok 3 and Shock Clock Max" and never names the Shock Clock 3 โ but the Shock Clock 3 product page states that what's in the box is a "Pavlok 3 module", a strap, a USB-C cable and a strap lock. Read literally, you're buying a Pavlok 3 in a Shock Clock box. Either way, voltage without current is a poor guide to how something feels โ Pavlok notes that "the current (amperage) is controlled by the skin resistance and other factors" โ but it's what they publish, and it's more than the product page tells you.
The more useful admission is in their troubleshooting article. Pavlok writes that skin resistance "cause[s] it to appear that the zap feature does not work on the lower strength levels," and that while "30% Zap can overcome the electrical resistance" for most men, "for some me it may need 50%" (typo theirs). They also require that you "ensure that the device is fairly tight on your wrist and making contact with the skin."
Read that as a buyer: the bottom third of the range may do nothing for you, and the top of the range only works if you sleep with a band clamped tight enough to keep two electrodes pressed against your skin all night.
The evidence question, answered plainly
No peer-reviewed study has tested the Shock Clock, and no published research compares electrical stimulation against vibration for waking sleepers.
We searched PubMed on 12 August 2026. Searching "Pavlok" returns 62 records, every one of them papers by an unrelated Czech reproductive biologist with that surname โ zero about the device. Searches for electrical stimulation as a waking or arousal stimulus returned no results at all. The adjacent literature that does exist is about vibration: three papers on vibrotactile awakening, none of which compares a shock against a buzz.
The best-studied use of electric aversion in humans is smoking cessation, and the Cochrane review of it (Hajek & Stead, Aversive smoking for smoking cessation, 2004) concluded that "other aversion methods were not shown to be effective."
None of that proves a zap doesn't wake you. It means the claim that it wakes you better is, as of August 2026, unevidenced โ and it's being sold at roughly three times the price of a vibration band.
The failure mode nobody markets
The escalation ladder assumes you stay in the loop. Two named journalists testing the Shock Clock in print both stepped out of it.

She also reported the opposite of what the marketing implies about intensity: "On the mornings I didn't move fast enough and got zapped, I was always surprised by how painless it was compared to the feeling I'd been imagining." James Trew at Engadget (19 April 2016) found the shocks stronger than he expected โ the two testers disagree, and we'd rather report the disagreement than average it into a number.
But the removal problem isn't a matter of opinion. Any wrist device can be taken off by a half-asleep person, ours very much included. The difference is that a vibration alarm doesn't sell you an escalation as the reason to pay more for it. If the escalation is the product, the escalation being removable is the product failing.
Safety: the guidance exists, it just isn't where you'd look
To be fair to Pavlok โ they do publish contraindications. What they don't do is put them on the page where you buy the thing. They're in a help-centre article titled "Is the Zap Safe?", which states Pavlok is not intended for:
"Children, Pets, Women who may be pregnant, Those with certain heart conditions, Persons with an internal medical device (such as a pacemaker), Those with pre-existing medical conditions that may be affected by mild electrical stimulus."
And: "Pavlok is recommended for those that are 18+." The user guide filed with the FCC puts the same points far more bluntly โ "Do not use Pavlok if you are pregnant", "Do not use Pavlok if you are using a pacemaker or similar device", "Pavlok is not intended to be used by or on persons under the age of 18." Same company, two registers: a regulator gets "do not use," a customer gets "recommended for."
One absence worth flagging: epilepsy and seizure disorders are not mentioned anywhere โ not in the safety article, not in the FAQ, not in the FCC-filed guide. We are not saying the device is unsafe for people with epilepsy. We're saying that a company careful enough to warn about pacemakers and heart conditions has said nothing either way, and that silence is not a clearance. If that applies to you, ask a doctor, not a checkout page.
None of this applies to a vibration band, which is why this section has no equivalent on our side. A vibration motor has no contraindications to publish.
