Short answer: you're buying a shared form factor with an unknown motor inside it. The dozen near-identical listings are not necessarily the same product, they're the same shell — and the component that decides whether the thing wakes you, the vibration motor, is the one part no listing describes and no photograph reveals. Everything else on the page is copy.
That's not a reason to avoid them. It's a reason to buy them the way you'd buy anything unverifiable: cheaply, with the return route confirmed before you order, and with a plan for the fortnight in which you find out.

Why they all look the same
Search "vibrating alarm watch" and you get a wall of results that share a silhouette: a slim rectangular module in a silicone strap, a small monochrome display, two or three buttons, a USB module that slides out or a magnetic charging cable.
The plain explanation is that a handful of contract manufacturers produce a small number of reference designs, and many sellers put their own name on one. This is completely normal in consumer electronics and it isn't a scandal — your kitchen scales and your bike lights were probably made the same way.
What matters is the consequence. The shell being shared tells you nothing about the internals being shared. Two listings with identical photographs can ship with different motors, different battery cells, different strap compounds and different firmware, because those are the variables a buyer specifies when they place a factory order — and the cheaper the order, the more likely the specification went downward.
The motor is the whole product, and nobody describes it
Here is the thing to hold on to: a vibrating alarm is a motor, a clock and a strap. The clock is trivially solved and the strap is visible in the photos. The motor is the entire product, and it's invisible.
Nothing in this category — not the cheap listings, not the branded direct-to-consumer sellers, and not us — publishes the figure that would let you compare motors: an amplitude or force rating. So you cannot read your way to an answer. You cannot infer it from price, because a listing can be cheap because the motor is small or cheap because the seller has no marketing costs, and the page looks the same either way.
Everything else the listing tells you — the alarm count, the battery days, the number of intensity levels — is real but secondary. A band with nine intensity levels and a weak motor is nine flavours of not waking up.
Where the specs contradict themselves
This is the most useful thing you can check for free, and it takes two minutes.
Pick a listing, note the headline specs, then find the manufacturer's own site if one exists and compare. Then compare the marketplace listing against the same product on any other retailer. A striking share of the time the numbers do not agree — intensity levels, battery life, alarm counts and water resistance are the usual offenders.
There are dull reasons for this. Listings get written once and never updated through a hardware revision. Bullet points get translated and lose precision. A seller copies a competitor's copy. A product page describes the Pro model while the listing sells the standard one. None of that requires bad faith.
But the practical reading is the same either way: when two of a seller's own sources disagree, neither is a fact. Treat the whole spec list as approximate rather than picking whichever number you preferred, and buy on the terms you can verify — the return window — rather than the ones you can't.
The no-brand-to-complain-to problem
This is the part that costs people real money, and it doesn't show up until something goes wrong.
Many of these listings have no website behind them. No support address, no company page, no returns policy of their own, no history you can look up. The seller name is often a string of capital letters that returns nothing on a search.
So when the strap tears at the lug in month four, or the battery starts holding two days instead of twelve, or the unit simply stops charging, there's nobody to write to. Your recourse is whatever the marketplace's policy gives you, and that policy has a window measured in weeks.
That matters because the failures in this category are late failures. A dead-on-arrival unit is easy — you return it within days and everyone's fine. The characteristic problems are a motor that weakens over months, a battery that degrades, a strap that splits at the stress point. All of those surface after the return window has shut, and at that point a missing brand is the difference between a replacement and a bin.
What the listing tells you versus what actually decides it

The review-count row deserves a note. Marketplace reviews can attach to a listing that has changed products underneath them, or aggregate across variants that differ in the one component you care about. A five-star review of the black strap does not evidence the motor in the blue one. This is a limitation of how listings work rather than an accusation about any seller.
When buying one is the right call
We sell against these and we still think there are three cases where a cheap band is the correct purchase.
You want to test whether vibration works for you at all. Entirely reasonable. If you don't know whether a wrist stimulus will wake you, finding out for the smallest possible outlay is sound reasoning, and the marketplace return window is genuinely adequate for a two-week test. Do vibrating alarms actually work?
You need something by tomorrow. Nobody shipping direct beats next-day delivery. If you have an early flight on Thursday, buy the thing that arrives Wednesday. Waking up for an early flight.
It's a low-stakes secondary alarm. A backup, a nap timer, a gym thing. The consequences of it dying in month six are minor.
Where it's a poor call is the case most people are actually in: you're a heavy sleeper, you've already failed with loud alarms, this needs to work for years, and you're buying a device whose deciding component is undisclosed from a seller who won't exist when it degrades.
