Do vibrating alarms actually work?
Short answer: yes, for most people — and the reason is worth understanding, because it tells you whether you're one of the two groups it fails.
Vibration works not because it's stronger than sound but because it's different from sound, and you haven't spent years teaching your brain to ignore it. If your alarm tone has stopped working, that's exactly the problem being solved.
The two groups it fails: people who are significantly sleep-deprived (nothing wakes them, and no purchase fixes that), and people with profound hearing loss who need certainty (a bed shaker is a bigger stimulus than any wrist band). Everyone else, it's a question of trying one — which is why the only sensible way to buy is with a long return window. Ours is 100 days from the day it arrives.

Why vibration works when a louder alarm doesn't
Habituation. Your brain filters predictable, repeated stimuli — the reason you stop hearing traffic outside your window after a fortnight. The same thing happens to your alarm tone. Turning the volume up buys a few weeks, then you habituate to the louder version too. Changing the channel — touch instead of sound — resets that, because it's novel. Direct contact. A vibration on the skin doesn't cross a room, get muffled by a duvet, or compete with a fan. It's applied to you.
It's harder to dismiss on autopilot. A phone alarm dies to a well-practised gesture your brain can run while you're still asleep — reach, swipe, no memory formed. And it reaches exactly one person. This is the case nothing else covers. A shaker moves the mattress and wakes your partner. A dawn lamp lights the room. A wrist band wakes you and nobody else — which for a lot of people is the entire reason to buy one, and it doesn't depend on any of the arguments above being right.
The honest state of the evidence
Something no brand in this category will tell you: there is no good published trial comparing wrist vibration alarms against sound alarms for waking healthy adults. The study doesn't exist.
What does exist:
- Vibrotactile alerting is well established in accessibility. Bed shakers and vibrating alert systems have been standard, prescribed, publicly funded equipment for deaf people for decades. That's a long practical track record for the mechanism.
- Arousal thresholds are individual and vary by sleep stage — which is why the same alarm works on Tuesday and fails on Thursday, regardless of what you bought.
- Everything else is marketing. Several brands advertise a "99% wake rate" or a "100% wake-up guarantee." None publishes a methodology or a sample size, because no study exists. We displayed a figure like that once. We removed it.
So: strong mechanism, decades of accessibility use, no controlled consumer evidence. That's the truthful position — and it's precisely why the guarantee is the specification that matters, not the spec sheet.
Who it reliably works for
- People sharing a bed. The strongest case in the category, and it barely depends on how well the vibration wakes you. How to wake up without waking your partner.
- People using earplugs or white noise — night shift workers, light sleepers, anyone in a noisy building. You've deliberately blocked the channel a sound alarm needs. Night shift daytime sleep.
- People whose alarm tone stopped working. Changing the channel is exactly the intervention.
- People in shared or public sleeping spaces — dorms, hostels, bunk rooms, night trains, hospital chairs.
