Can you use an Apple Watch or Fitbit as a silent alarm?
Short answer: yes, and if you already own one, try it before buying anything else. Both wake you with vibration and both do it well. The reasons people end up switching are almost always the same three: nightly charging, comfort, or wanting the notifications gone.

We've written it because the alternative โ pretending smartwatches don't do this โ would be nonsense, and because a lot of people asking the question already have a perfectly good answer sitting on their bedside table.
They genuinely work
An Apple Watch will wake you with a haptic tap on the wrist, and it does this whether the watch is in silent mode or not โ silent mode suppresses sound, not haptics. Set an alarm on the watch itself, or use the Sleep schedule's wake-up alarm, and it taps you awake without a sound in the room. Fitbit's vibrating alarms work on the same principle.
The mechanism is identical to a dedicated band: vibration against the skin, no sound, contained to the wearer. If that's what you need, you may already own it.
Not every sleep wearable does, though โ a ring is a sensor rather than an alerting device, and the Oura Ring has no alarm and no vibration hardware at all. At the other end of the wrist-worn range are the shock alarms, which swap the tap for an electrical zap โ whether that wakes you better than a vibration is a question nobody has published a study on.
There's a wrinkle worth knowing on Apple Watch: an alarm set on your iPhone can be routed to the watch, but the behaviour depends on your settings and whether the phone is nearby and locked. If you want reliability, set the alarm on the watch itself rather than trusting the handoff. A lot of "my watch didn't wake me" complaints trace back to that.
Where they actually fail
Charging. This is the big one and it's structural, not a bug. Smartwatches with bright screens and continuous sensors last roughly a day or two. Wearing one overnight means charging it during the day โ and the moment your charging routine slips, the watch is flat at bedtime and there's no alarm. A device you have to remember to charge daily will eventually fail on the one night it matters. This is the single most common reason people move to something with a two-week battery.
Comfort. A watch built to be legible and durable in daylight is a different object from one built to be forgotten overnight. Weight, case thickness and a hard back that presses into the wrist all matter more when you're lying on it for eight hours. Some people never notice; others take it off after a week and go back to a phone alarm, which puts them back where they started. Fastening matters more than the spec sheets suggest, too โ if a small buckle or a tiny side button is genuinely hard work for you, alarms for tremor and limited dexterity goes through what to look for.
Notifications. If the reason you want a silent alarm is to get your phone out of the bedroom, wearing a device that mirrors your phone's notifications defeats a good part of it. Sleep Focus and theatre mode help. Whether that's enough is personal.
Sleep tracking that wakes you up. Some people find that wearing a device that measures their sleep makes them sleep worse โ checking the score in the morning, feeling anxious about a bad night. There's a term for the anxious version, orthosomnia. If tracking helps you, keep tracking. If you've noticed you sleep worse since you started, that's worth taking seriously.
The honest decision
Keep using your smartwatch if you already own one, your charging habit is reliable, and you're comfortable sleeping in it. Genuinely โ don't buy a second device to solve a problem you've already solved.
Consider a dedicated band if you've tried the watch and the charging keeps catching you out, or it's uncomfortable overnight, or you want a bedroom with no screens and no notifications in it.
Consider neither if you have profound hearing loss and sleep alone. A bed shaker moves the whole mattress and delivers far more force than any wrist device. The same reasoning applies, more strongly, with combined sight and hearing loss, where touch is the only channel left and there is no visual backup if the wrist signal is missed.
Why battery life is the deciding factor more often than people expect
It sounds like a specification, but it behaves like a reliability property. A one-day battery means roughly 365 opportunities a year to forget. A two-week battery means about 26. The failure mode isn't "the battery is bad" โ it's that you're relying on a daily habit, and daily habits break.
That's the whole practical case for a simpler device: fewer things that need to go right for the alarm to happen.
