Vibration alarms vs sound alarms: what actually wakes you up
Short answer: vibration alarms use touch instead of hearing, so years of habituation to alarm sounds don't transfer โ making them more reliable once sound alarms have stopped working for you.
Nearly every alarm most people have ever used relies on sound โ a phone alarm, a nightstand clock, a radio alarm. So when sound-based alarms stop working reliably, the instinct is to make the sound louder or more obnoxious rather than to question the sound itself. It's worth questioning the sound itself.
How sound alarms fail
Sound is processed by your brain even while you're asleep, but your brain also learns to filter it.
