Alarm clocks for deaf and hard-of-hearing people: what actually works
Short answer: the reliable options all replace sound with something else entirely โ touch (bed shakers, wrist-worn vibration alarms) or light (strobe alarms) โ and which one works best depends more on how deep you sleep and how much residual hearing you have than on brand or price.
A sound-based alarm assumes you'll hear it. For someone who is deaf or hard of hearing, that assumption doesn't hold, so the alarm has to work through a different sense. There are three real categories on the market, and they're not interchangeable.
Bed shaker alarms
A bed shaker is a puck-sized unit placed under your pillow or mattress that vibrates the entire bed when triggered, usually connected to a bedside alarm clock. Because it moves the whole bed rather than a small area of skin, it's generally the strongest option available, which is why it's the standard recommendation for profound hearing loss or very deep sleepers. The tradeoff is it wakes the whole bed โ not ideal if you share one with someone on a different schedule.
Wearable vibration alarms
A wrist-worn or clip-on vibration alarm puts the vibration directly against your skin instead of the mattress. It's quieter in the "only affects one person" sense โ useful if a bed shaker would wake a partner โ and it travels well since there's no separate base unit. The tradeoff is the vibration is more localized, so it depends more on intensity and fit against the skin than a bed shaker does.
Strobe light alarms
A flashing light alarm, sometimes built into an alarm clock, uses vision instead of touch. It works well for people who wake reliably to light and sleep with eyes at least partially responsive to changes in the room, but it's the least reliable of the three for very deep sleep, since it depends on some visual awareness even while asleep.
Which one is actually right for you
None of these is universally "the best" โ it depends on your specific situation:
- Profound hearing loss, sleep alone, need maximum reliability โ a bed shaker is usually the strongest starting point.

Vibration and light-based alarms don't rely on hearing at all โ they work identically whether the reason you can't rely on sound is hearing loss or being an unusually heavy sleeper.
