Why you turn off your alarm in your sleep and don't remember
Short answer: dismissing an alarm without forming a memory of it is normal. Waking is gradual rather than instant, and a familiar action like reaching for a phone can be carried out during a stage of arousal too shallow to lay down a memory โ so the alarm genuinely did go off, and you genuinely don't remember it.
If you've ever woken up an hour late to find your alarm switched off โ not snoozed, off โ you've probably assumed you did it deliberately and lied to yourself about it. That isn't usually what happened.
Waking isn't a switch
It's tempting to think of sleep and wakefulness as binary. They aren't. Coming out of sleep is a gradual process, and different parts of the brain come back online at different speeds. Motor function โ the ability to reach out and press something โ returns considerably earlier than the systems responsible for judgement and memory formation.
That gap is the whole explanation. There is a window where you can reliably perform a rehearsed physical action while being, for practical purposes, still asleep. Dismissing an alarm is about as rehearsed as an action gets.

Why it gets worse over time, not better
The obvious response is a louder alarm. It rarely works for long, and there's a reason.
Your brain learns to filter familiar, non-threatening sounds. It's the same mechanism that stops you noticing a fridge humming or traffic outside. An alarm tone you've heard several hundred times stops being treated as significant โ the sound still reaches you, but it stops triggering a full arousal. This is habituation, and it's why loud alarms fail heavy sleepers.
So the pattern is predictable: a new alarm sound works well for a few weeks, then starts failing, then fails completely. You raise the volume, and the cycle repeats a little faster.
Sleep debt makes the window wider
If you're chronically short on sleep, the pressure to stay asleep is higher and the window where you can act-without-remembering gets longer. Someone running a two-hour nightly deficit is far more likely to sleep-dismiss than the same person properly rested.
Worth ruling out before anything else โ how much sleep you actually need is the first thing to check, because if this is the cause, no alarm fixes it.
Two other things that widen the same window
Sleep debt is not the only thing that deepens the gap between moving and remembering.
Alcohol. A drink in the evening shortens the time it takes to fall asleep and then fragments the second half of the night, which is exactly the stretch most morning alarms land in. Sedating medication. What actually helps
Put distance between you and the dismiss button. The standard advice โ alarm across the room โ works precisely because it removes the rehearsed action. You can't dismiss what you can't reach without standing up, and standing up wakes you properly. The catch is that it also wakes anyone else in the room.
Change the sensory channel. Habituation is specific to the stimulus. A wake-up that reaches you through touch rather than hearing doesn't run into the ceiling a sound alarm does, because you have years of learned indifference to alarm tones and none to a vibration against your wrist. Don't assume a harsher stimulus solves the reach problem. Stop rotating alarm sounds as a strategy. Changing tone every fortnight delays habituation but doesn't prevent it, and it means you never build a reliable wake response to anything.
