Two alarms, one bed: what to buy when you both need waking
Short answer: this is a different problem from the one most articles solve. Most of them โ including ours โ answer "how do I wake up without waking my partner", where one person needs an alarm and the other just needs to be left alone. This page is about the harder case: you both need waking, at different times, in the same bed. The honest finding after checking the market is that no brand sells a purpose-built pair. A few offer a quantity discount if you buy two of the same device; most don't even do that, and two of them won't show you the two-unit price until you're deep in the checkout.
We make one of the products discussed near the bottom. Every price below was read off someone else's website on 12 August 2026, and where we couldn't read a price we say so rather than guess.
Nobody makes a couples pack
We looked for a two-pack, couples pack or pair across every wrist-worn vibrating alarm brand we could find, plus the bed-shaker manufacturers. Here is what actually exists.

Two things worth knowing before you use that table.
First, HiStrips and FitSleeps both advertise a multi-unit discount without displaying the multi-unit price. The tier buttons and the "SAVE 20%" labels render on the page; the actual figure for two does not. We tried repeatedly. If you want two, you will find out what two costs at the checkout, not before.
Second, there is one genuine two-pack on the market โ an unbranded Amazon listing titled "2 Pack Vibrating Alarm Wristband to Not Disturb Others". We could not verify its price, its brand, or a single one of its specifications, because Amazon blocks the kind of automated reading we do for every other price on this site. We are mentioning it because it exists and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. We are not recommending it, because we know nothing about it.
The bed-shaker route has an undocumented hole in it
The obvious alternative to two wrist bands is one clock driving two shakers, one under each side of the bed. It is a sensible idea. It may not be possible.
The Sonic Alert Sonic Bomb (SBB500SS, $44.99, reduced from $72.99) has dual alarms โ two separate wake times โ but ships with one shaker, and no second shaker outlet is documented anywhere on the product page or in the manual. So the clock can hold both your times; the shaker can only reach one of you. The second person gets the audible alarm, which reaches both of you and defeats the point.
You can buy a second shaker on its own โ Sonic Alert's spare is $17.99, Bellman & Symfon's is $43.95, and Geemarc sells the CLA2 pad as an accessory but shows no price on its own site. What no manufacturer states, anywhere we could find, is whether one clock can actually drive two of them. Not "no" โ genuinely unstated. Sonic Alert's manual says only "Place the bed shaker under your mattress or pillow" and uses the singular throughout. We checked Sonic Alert, Geemarc and Bellman & Symfon and none of them addresses it.
If you're considering this route, email the manufacturer and ask before you buy two shakers. We would rather tell you to ask than guess on your behalf.
Two products sit architecturally close to a two-person setup without documenting it either. The Bellman Vibio ($89.95, from $119.95) is an app-controlled shaker with no clock base, so in principle two people could each run one โ but Bellman doesn't say whether two can be paired. The Amplicom TCL Vibe ($49.95) ships with a dual alarm and one wireless wristband, and doesn't say whether a second wristband can be added. Both are worth an email.
What the research actually shows โ and what it doesn't
There is a lot of confident writing about partners ruining each other's sleep. The evidence is more interesting and more qualified than the marketing suggests.
Awakenings genuinely do travel between partners. Walters and colleagues, publishing in Sleep Health in 2020, monitored 55 couples without sleep disorders in Melbourne for seven nights using actigraphy and sleep diaries. They measured how often one person's awakening was immediately preceded by their partner being awake. On average, 18.9% (ยฑ 7.5%) of a person's awakenings were transmissions โ that is, roughly one awakening in five arrived from the other side of the bed. Around 20% of a partner's awakenings were passed on, and people slept through about 52% of the minutes their partner spent awake.
So does movement. The classic study here is Pankhurst and Horne in Sleep in 1994, who tracked 46 pairs of bed partners over eight nights with wrist actimetry. They found that 5โ6% of all 30-second sleep epochs contained discrete movements, with about a third of those movements common to both partners within the same epoch โ highest in younger couples. Notably, most couples were unaware of this synchrony and reported sleeping better with their partner present.
And sharing a bed is not simply bad for you. Drews and colleagues, in Frontiers in Psychiatry in 2020, ran 12 couples through laboratory dual polysomnography across four nights. Co-sleeping was associated with about 10% more REM sleep, less fragmented REM (5.4 disruptions versus 8.5), and longer undisturbed REM fragments (22.0 minutes versus 13.4). It was also associated with more leg movements (61.5 versus 50.9). Twelve couples is a proof of concept, not a population finding, and we're saying so rather than rounding it up into a headline.
The most current synthesis is a systematic review by Rayward, Green and Little in Sleep Health in 2026, searching databases through September 2025. All four studies it found on partner disturbance found evidence of the phenomenon, and two of three studies on sleep architecture found increased REM duration when co-sleeping. Its own conclusion is that no single mechanism explains the net effect. We should be straight with you: the publisher's full text was behind a barrier we couldn't get through, so that summary comes from the bibliographic record, not from reading the paper.
Here is the honest gap, and it matters for this page. We could not find a single study that isolates whether a partner's alarm specifically measurably harms the other person's sleep. The research above is about awakenings and movement, not alarms. If you see a brand claim that a partner's alarm is measurably damaging your sleep, ask them for the citation. We looked and couldn't produce one.
How common is this, really?
Sleeping apart is common, and the numbers come from surveys rather than studies. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine commissions an annual poll through the research agency Atomik. The 2025 survey of 2,007 US adults, fielded 5โ13 June 2025 with a margin of error of ยฑ2 points, found that 31% have opted for what it calls a "sleep divorce" โ most commonly people aged 35โ44, at 39%. It also found that 15% use a silent alarm to accommodate a bed partner.
The 2023 edition, 2,005 US adults, asked directly what people do to adjust their routine for a partner: 20% sleep in another room on occasion, 15% consistently, 33% go to sleep at a different time than they'd choose, and 16% use a silent alarm.
Be clear about what those are. They are commissioned market-research polls published by a professional body to raise awareness, not peer-reviewed studies. The sampling is disclosed and the numbers are probably fine, but they aren't the same class of evidence as the studies above, and nobody who quotes them ever says so.
Are you actually a mismatched couple?
This is where the research gets genuinely counterintuitive, so it's worth two paragraphs.
The biggest dataset is Richmond and colleagues in Communications Biology in 2023, covering 47,420 UK Biobank spouse-pairs and replicating in up to 127,035 23andMe spouse-pairs. For self-reported chronotype โ whether you consider yourself a morning or evening person โ they found a weak inverse correlation of r = โ0.11, replicating at r = โ0.13. In plain terms, spouses are very slightly more likely to describe themselves as opposite types than as matching ones. The authors call this "unexpected", because for almost every other trait spouses resemble each other. Yet their accelerometer-measured activity timing was positively correlated at r = 0.24. Your bodies converge; your self-descriptions don't.
Where mismatch does show up, it shows up in sleep quality. Sprajcer and colleagues in Chronobiology International in 2022 assessed 32 Australian couples and found that couples with matched chronotypes reported better sleep quality than mismatched couples (F(1,62) = 48.02, p < .001). Thirty-two couples is small, and it's cross-sectional, so it tells you the two things travel together and nothing about which causes which.
One number you will see quoted that we could not find any source for: the percentage of couples who are chronotype-mismatched. Nobody reports it. Richmond gives a correlation, not a rate. We're not going to make one up.
