Sleeping with earplugs and still waking up
Short answer: you've deliberately blocked the one channel your alarm uses, so the fix isn't a louder alarm โ it's an alarm that doesn't need sound at all. A wrist vibration alarm solves this completely, because it reaches you through touch and the earplugs stay in.
The alternative most people try first โ cranking the phone volume until it gets through foam โ works badly. Why the obvious fixes don't hold
Turning the volume up. Foam earplugs are typically rated around 30 dB of noise reduction, so you're asking the alarm to overcome that plus your own arousal threshold. You can win that fight โ at a volume that is genuinely unpleasant for anyone else in the home, and that you'll habituate to within a few weeks anyway. Why habituation kills loud alarms.
Taking one earplug out. Common, and it defeats the purpose โ the ear you left open is the one hearing the traffic, the snoring or the flatmate at 1am.
Trusting your phone on vibrate. Depends entirely on the surface. On a hard nightstand it's a loud buzz that wakes the room; on a soft one it's imperceptible. Neither is what you want. And it's still the phone, which brings its own set of failure modes โ eleven of them.
Waking naturally. Works if your schedule is genuinely consistent โ your body starts preparing to wake before your alarm fires. If it isn't, don't rely on it. How anticipatory waking works and when it stops.
What actually works
A wrist vibration alarm. This is the direct answer: it reaches you through touch, so hearing protection is irrelevant. No speaker, no volume to set, nothing anyone else in the room experiences. You keep the earplugs in all night and still get up.
A bed shaker under the mattress, if you sleep in the same bed every night and want the strongest possible stimulus. Note the trade-off: it moves the mattress, so it wakes your partner too. Comparison of the two.
A smartwatch you already own. An Apple Watch or Fitbit does haptic-only alarms โ free, worth trying tonight before buying anything. The frictions are daily charging and a screen lighting the room. Where it works and where it doesn't.
Getting the earplugs right, which is half the problem
Most people who say earplugs don't work for them are wearing them wrong or wearing the wrong kind.
Foam plugs need to be inserted properly. Roll them thin between your fingers first, reach over your head and pull your ear up and back to straighten the canal, insert, then hold for twenty seconds while they expand. Skipping the roll is why they fall out.
Silicone and flanged reusables (Loop's Quiet range sits around $24.95, HiStrips sell a set at $12.95) don't need rolling and suit side sleepers better, because they sit flatter against the ear. They generally block a bit less than well-fitted foam.
Wax or moldable silicone sits over the canal entrance rather than in it โ the most comfortable option for side sleepers, and the easiest to get a seal with if foam irritates you.
Get the size right. Standard foam is designed around an average canal. If plugs constantly work loose or ache, you probably need small or large rather than a different brand.
Give it a fortnight. Sleeping with something in your ears is a genuine adjustment. Most people who quit do so in the first three nights.
