Extra-loud alarm clocks like the Sonic Bomb: who they actually suit
Short answer: they suit people who sleep alone, in a building where noise doesn't matter, with significant hearing loss โ and for that person they are excellent and probably the right buy. For everybody else, the useful component is the bed shaker, not the siren, and you can have the shaker without the siren.
The Sonic Bomb and clocks like it are usually three devices in one box: a very loud tone, a flashing light, and a wired puck that goes under the mattress or pillow and vibrates. Those three parts fail and succeed for completely different reasons, and the reviews mix them up constantly.

What you're actually buying
An extra-loud alarm clock in this class is a mains-powered bedside unit with a large display, a tone considerably louder than a phone or a standard clock radio, usually a flashing strobe, and a socket on the back for a bed shaker โ a hockey-puck-sized vibrating unit on a cable that you place under the mattress, under the pillow, or between the mattress and the base.
Sonic Alert's Sonic Bomb is the best-known example. Geemarc and Bellman & Symfon build clocks on the same principle for the deaf and hard-of-hearing market, generally with better build quality and more sober industrial design. How those two compare.
Specifications in this category drift between revisions and retailers, so check the current listing for the model in front of you rather than trusting a figure in any article. The one thing worth confirming before you order is whether the shaker is included or sold separately, because on some models it isn't in the box and that's the part you actually want.
The part that does the work is not the loud part
This is the whole argument of the page, so here it is plainly.
If you can hear well enough for volume to be the answer, you have probably already discovered that volume stops working. Your brain filters predictable, familiar, non-threatening input, and a tone you hear every morning becomes exactly that within weeks. Turning it up resets the clock for a while and then you're back where you started, only now you're the person whose alarm can be heard through a wall. The mechanism in full.
The shaker is different. It's a mechanical stimulus delivered through the mattress to your whole body, and it works on a sensory channel you haven't spent years learning to ignore at six in the morning. It also moves far more mass than any wearable can, which is why it remains the strongest non-acoustic wake stimulus you can buy. Bed shakers, compared.
So when someone writes "this clock finally woke me," they are usually describing the puck. The siren is what woke the person in the next room.
Who these clocks genuinely suit
People with significant or profound hearing loss who sleep alone. This is the core case and it isn't close. The shaker doesn't depend on hearing at all, the strobe adds a second channel, and a mains-powered unit doesn't die overnight. Heavy sleepers in a detached house or a basement. If nobody is affected by the noise, the belt-and-braces approach of tone plus shaker plus light is legitimately effective.
People who will not wear anything overnight. A real constraint, and more common than the wearable industry likes to admit. A shaker asks nothing of you except that you sleep on a mattress.
Anyone who wants a device with no battery to forget. Mains power removes the most common cause of a missed morning across this entire category. Check whether the model has a battery backup for power cuts.
Shift workers sleeping in daylight, where a strobe is redundant but a shaker through a mattress works the same at 2pm as at 6am. More on that.
Who they don't suit, and why the reviews don't tell you
Anyone sharing a bed. This is the big one. A shaker under a shared mattress transmits through the whole mattress โ it does not politely stop at your side. On a foam mattress especially, your partner gets a somewhat attenuated version of the same wake-up. Pillow placement helps and doesn't solve it. How to wake up without waking your partner.
Flats, shared houses, thin walls, sleeping children. The tone in these clocks is designed to be heard by someone who barely hears. Everyone with normal hearing in a thirty-foot radius will also hear it, every single morning. Waking up without disturbing roommates or kids.
Travel. It's a mains-powered box with a cabled puck. It is not going in hand luggage, and the plug is wrong when you land. Waking up in a new time zone.
Anyone sensitive to sudden loud noise. Waking to a startle response every morning is not neutral, and for some people it materially worsens how the whole day starts. Alarms and sensory sensitivity.

Two rows deserve emphasis. "Wakes a bed partner" is the line that eliminates these clocks for a large share of the people who consider them, and it is the line that product pages never mention. And "easy to silence half-asleep" is the quiet advantage of a bedside box: reaching a physical button on a unit across the nightstand is a more deliberate act than swiping a phone, which is a real defence against switching your alarm off in your sleep.
