Why winter mornings are harder
Short answer: through the winter you are waking up before sunrise, which means the strongest signal your body clock uses to stay aligned โ morning light โ simply isn't there. Your clock drifts later while your alarm stays put, and the gap between them is what makes December mornings feel so much worse than June ones. The fix is to get light into the first part of your day artificially, and to be stricter about consistency than you need to be in summer.
The numbers are worse than people assume

If you get up at 6:30 in Edinburgh, sunrise is over two hours away, and by the time it arrives you're indoors under office lighting. You then leave work after sunset. It's entirely possible to go a full working week in December without being outdoors in daylight.
That's the actual problem. Not the cold, not the duvet โ the absence of the input your clock is built around.
What the missing light does
Your circadian clock is entrained mainly by light hitting the retina, and morning light in particular pulls it earlier. Take that away and, for most people, the clock drifts later, because the human free-running period tends to run slightly longer than 24 hours.
So over the winter your body's preferred wake time creeps later while your alarm stays at 6:30. The gap widens. Each week, waking feels slightly more like being interrupted mid-sleep, because increasingly it is.
Three consequences follow:

More snoozing. Not coincidentally, snoozing peaks in winter. The snooze is a response to being woken at the wrong point in the cycle, which is exactly what the dark is producing. The snooze button habit has the mechanism.
More sleeping through the alarm. Deeper sleep at alarm time means a higher chance of dismissing it with no memory of doing so.
There's also the separate matter of mood. Seasonal affective disorder is a recognised depressive pattern with a seasonal onset, and a much larger group experiences milder winter low mood โ lower energy, more sleep, carbohydrate craving, reduced motivation. If the winter version of you is not just tired but flat, that's worth naming rather than pushing through, and it's treatable.
What actually helps
Light, as early as you can get it. This is the whole game, and everything else is secondary.
- Get outside within an hour of waking, even before sunrise properly lands. Twilight is far brighter than indoor lighting โ a well-lit office is a few hundred lux; an overcast winter morning outdoors is thousands. Ten to fifteen minutes of walking helps.
- A 10,000-lux light box for 20โ30 minutes at your wake time, if you can't get outside. Positioned to the side at about arm's length, not stared into. This is the best-evidenced intervention available, and it's the standard treatment for seasonal affective disorder as well.

- Take the daylight at lunchtime. If your mornings genuinely can't accommodate it, twenty minutes outside at midday is far better than nothing โ this is often the only real daylight a winter office worker gets.
- Open the blinds first thing even when it's dark. It won't do much in December, but through February it increasingly will, and the habit is already in place.
Hold the wake time. Consistency matters more in winter, not less, because it's the only stable signal left when the light one is missing. Dim the evening properly. Bright light late pushes the clock later โ the same direction winter is already pushing it. The last two hours matter.
Warm the room on a timer. Getting out of bed into a cold room is a real behavioural barrier, and a heating schedule that starts 30 minutes before the alarm removes it for very little money. This is a small thing that works.
Reconsider the target. If your winter wake time is only enforced by habit rather than by an actual obligation, moving it 30 minutes later for the dark months is a legitimate answer rather than a defeat.
Vitamin D, for the reason it's actually recommended. In the UK the NHS advises everyone consider a 10 microgram daily supplement in autumn and winter, because sunlight at those latitudes is too weak for the skin to make enough. That advice is about bone and muscle health. The evidence that supplementation improves winter mood is weak, and it's worth not conflating the two โ take it for the reason it's recommended, and don't expect it to fix your mornings.
The alarm side of it
Winter is when alarm setups that were adequate in summer start failing, and the reasons are specific.
You're being woken from deeper sleep, so the stimulus needs to be more reliable, not just louder. Volume you habituate to; a change of modality you don't. This is the core argument in why loud alarms don't work for heavy sleepers.
A loud alarm in a dark house at 6am wakes everyone, and in winter everyone else is also short of light and short of patience. The phone is a worse idea in winter than usual. Waking in the dark to a bright screen is an unpleasant start, the light is going into eyes that have been dark-adapted for eight hours, and you're one swipe from a notification you'll still be thinking about at 6:40. When it's more than dark mornings
Some of this is environmental and some of it is clinical, and the distinction is worth making.
If, every winter, you experience persistently low mood, significant loss of interest, sleeping much more than usual, notable appetite or weight change, and difficulty functioning โ and it reliably lifts in spring โ that's the pattern of seasonal affective disorder. It responds to treatment, including light therapy under proper guidance, talking therapies and in some cases medication.
