Why doesn't any bed shaker publish a vibration rating?
Short answer: because the industry has never agreed on one to publish. Loudness has decibels, a number every buyer can compare across brands before purchase. Bed shaker vibration has no equivalent figure that any manufacturer โ including us โ puts on a spec sheet. That's not one brand being cagey; it's a genuine gap across the whole category.
What a rating would actually need to include
A useful vibration rating isn't a single number, which is part of why nobody's settled on one. To describe how hard a shaker actually shakes, you'd need at minimum the force the motor generates (related to the size of its eccentric weight and how fast it spins), the frequency it operates at, and some standard about what it's tested against โ vibration measured resting on a hard bench means something different from vibration measured under a mattress, and mattresses vary enormously in how much of that vibration they absorb before it reaches you. Sound has an advantage here: a decibel meter placed a fixed distance from a speaker gives a comparable number regardless of the room. There's no equally simple, standard setup for measuring what a shaker delivers into an arbitrary mattress.
Loud alarm clocks do publish a number, because it's genuinely simple to measure. The Sonic Bomb SBB500SS, for instance, is rated at 113 dB โ a figure you can hold up against any other loud alarm clock's rating and compare directly, alongside its own 12V wired bed shaker attachment, at $44.99 as checked 29 August 2026. Nothing in the bed-shaker-only category has an equivalent published figure.
What a rating would tell you
If a standard existed and every brand published it, you'd at least be able to compare two shakers' motors on paper before buying either one โ roughly, which one is likely to produce a stronger shake at the source, all else equal. That's genuinely useful information, and its absence is a real gap, not a manufactured one.
What it still wouldn't tell you
Even a perfect, standardised rating wouldn't answer the question that actually matters to a buyer: will this wake me. That depends on the mattress it ends up under (foam absorbs, springs transmit โ a rating measured on a test bench says nothing about your particular bed), on placement (pillow versus mattress), on your own arousal threshold that night, and on factors like sleep debt or alcohol that have nothing to do with the device at all. A motor-force number is one input among several, and arguably not the largest one. Even in the accessibility space, where vibrotactile alerting has decades of practical, prescribed use, published research doesn't resolve to a single number that guarantees an individual will wake โ reliability there is described as varying with age, alcohol, sleep stage and hearing status, not as a fixed rating (Bruck & Thomas, Ear and Hearing, 2009). A device rating, if one existed, would sit alongside that variability, not erase it.
The same gap exists one shelf over: wrist bands
This isn't a bed-shaker-specific problem โ it's the same hole in the neighbouring category. No wrist-worn vibration alarm brand publishes its motor's force rating either, for the same underlying reason: there's no agreed way to measure "how strong does this feel on a wrist" that would be comparable across brands and skin types.
