Bed shaker alarm features, explained
Short answer: most bed shaker spec sheets list the same eight or nine features, and most buyers only need two or three of them. The rest are worth knowing about mainly so a sales page can't upsell you on something irrelevant to your actual problem.

Most of this table exists because manufacturers assume you want a louder, longer, more customizable version of a conventional alarm clock. The genuinely different feature โ the one that changes what kind of problem this device solves โ is the shaker pad itself.
Shaker pad types: wired vs wireless vs rechargeable
Nearly every bed shaker on the market ships as a wired pad running off a low-voltage transformer, including the category benchmark, the Sonic Bomb SBB500SS ($44.99, list $72.99), and our own EIVOI clock. Wired pads trade portability for consistent power โ there's no battery to die mid-week. Some competitors market cordless or rechargeable pads instead, which travel better but add "did I charge it" to the list of ways a morning can go wrong.
Placement matters as much as the pad itself: directly under the pillow transmits more felt vibration than deep under a thick mattress, and memory foam absorbs meaningfully more of that vibration than an innerspring does โ a pad that feels aggressive in a demo video can feel almost polite under fourteen inches of foam. No brand, ours included, publishes a shaker force rating in newtons or any comparable unit, so the pad you're evaluating is genuinely untestable from a spec sheet. That's a category-wide gap, not a competitor-specific one.
For the deafest or heaviest sleepers, this is also where the research has something to say: a study of tactile alarms in deaf and hard-of-hearing adults (Bruck & Thomas, Ear and Hearing, 2009) found that most people woke reliably to a vibrating stimulus, but a minority did not wake at full intensity โ and that how well it worked varied with age, alcohol, sleep stage and degree of hearing loss. The practical upshot: test on your own mattress, in your own bed, within whatever return window you're given, because published research on other people's outcomes can't substitute for what your particular mattress does to a particular pad.
Dual alarms and why the second one matters
A second independent alarm time sounds like a minor convenience until you're the person setting a 6:15 for a weekday and forgetting to change it back on Saturday. The Sonic Bomb publishes dual alarms; so does Silent Wake, which sets two alarms directly on the wristband with no app. It's a small feature, but it's the difference between owning one clock and needing two.
Snooze range and alarm duration: the two numbers nobody compares
These two specs rarely make it into marketing copy, but they matter more than most of the features that do. Snooze range is how long the delay runs when you hit snooze โ the Sonic Bomb publishes an adjustable 1โ30 minutes. Alarm duration is how long the unit keeps going before it silently gives up, win or lose โ the Sonic Bomb publishes 1โ59 minutes, which matters enormously if you're the person who needs eleven minutes to surface. A unit that gives up after two minutes and one that's still buzzing forty minutes later are solving different problems, and almost nobody advertises which one they've built.
