Short answer
It depends which problem you have, and for a lot of people the honest answer is no. A wrist vibration alarm is worth its roughly $25 to $50 if you share a bed or a room and need to wake without waking someone else, if you are deaf or hard of hearing, or if you have genuinely stopped registering a tone you have heard every morning for years. It is not worth buying if you are sleep-deprived rather than a heavy sleeper, if your problem is silencing alarms in your sleep, or if you own a smartwatch that already does this for free. And since no brand publishes the one specification that would settle it in advance, buy against the return window rather than the price.

Worth it: the three cases that hold up
You share a bed or a room. The strongest case in the category, and the only one that does not depend on vibration being especially good at waking people. A bedside clock fills the room with sound, a bed shaker moves the mattress, a dawn lamp lights the room. A device worn on the wrist reaches exactly one person, and nothing else does. You are deaf or hard of hearing โ with the caveat that a bed shaker is the stronger primary alarm, and a wrist band is better treated as a supplement or a travel option. We sell both, so we have a commercial interest whichever way you go.
You have genuinely habituated to your alarm tone. Not "I find it unpleasant" but "I sleep straight through a sound I chose because it was horrible". Habituation during sleep is documented: LeVere, Morlock and Hart, in Physiological Psychology in 1975, found arousal responses were significantly weaker on nights with more stimulus presentations, and that a habituated response returns when the stimulus properties change. Switching channel from hearing to touch is a bigger change than turning the volume up. That buys months rather than permanence, because you will habituate to the new signal too.
Not worth it: the three cases where people are disappointed
You are sleep-deprived, not a heavy sleeper. By a wide margin the most common reason a purchase disappoints, and worth being blunt about: no device fixes a three-hour deficit. Rosenthal and colleagues, in Sleep in 1996, measured auditory awakening thresholds across the night and found that alert, well-rested people became easier to wake as the night went on, while sleepy and sleep-deprived participants showed no such decline. Short nights mean the same mornings, whatever you buy. Work out how much sleep you actually need first.
You turn alarms off in your sleep. A wrist device is within arm's reach by definition โ it is on your arm. It helps a little, since there is no rehearsed swipe attached to it the way there is to a phone, but if your failure mode is dismissing an alarm with no memory of doing it, you are buying a partial fix at full price. What works is distance, not sensory channel. Turning off your alarm in your sleep covers what actually helps.
You already own a smartwatch and have not tried its silent alarm. Apple Watch, Fitbit and Garmin all do haptic-only alarms, and they cost nothing tonight. The two frictions that push people to a dedicated device are overnight charging, at exactly the hour you need the watch worn, and a screen lighting up in a shared room. What the research supports, and where it stops
There is real evidence behind tactile alerting. It is worth knowing what it covers, because it is not wrist bands.
Bruck and Thomas, in Ear and Hearing in 2009, tested alarm signals on sleeping adults with mild to moderate hearing loss: bed and pillow shakers woke 80 to 84% of participants at the intensity the devices were sold at, while strobe lights woke 27%. In the companion paper Thomas and Bruck presented to the International Association for Fire Safety Science in 2008, 17% of hard-of-hearing participants failed to wake to a pillow shaker and 20% to a bed shaker at as-purchased intensity, those aged 60 and over were less likely to wake than younger participants, and among alcohol-impaired participants 36 to 42% did not wake at all. A 2022 review in Fire Technology by Smedberg, Ronchi and Hutchison called tactile devices the most reliable existing technology for deaf and hard-of-hearing sleepers, while noting that older age groups are under-studied.
That says two things at once: tactile alerting works well enough to be the recommended technology for people who cannot use sound, and roughly one in five did not wake to it, with failures rising sharply with age and alcohol. That is a device performing well, not one performing reliably.
It also does not transfer directly: those studies used shakers under a pillow or mattress, driven by mains-powered fire alarm equipment. No equivalent trial of a wrist-worn band against a sound alarm in healthy adults has been published, so anyone quoting you a wake rate for a wrist device is quoting marketing.
The specification nobody publishes
No brand in this category publishes a vibration motor force rating. Not the marketplace sellers, not the direct-to-consumer brands, not us. It is the one figure that would let you compare two bands on the thing that matters, and the whole category withholds it.
